There was a time when no one would question the existence of Campbeltown, a town that once had close to 30 distilleries operating. But in 1998 only one was left - Springbank - and the SWA (Scotch Whisky Association) decided that one distillery can't constitute a region. Even re opening of Glen Scotia Distillery was not enough for SWA to consider.
Sitting on the southern tip of the Mull of Kintyre, The Royal Burgh of Campbeltown used to be one of the most prolific whisky-producing regions in Scotland.
At its peak there were over 30 different distilleries in Campbeltown, but now that is down to just three – but they make up for the lack of distilleries by producing a host of distinctive malt whiskies between them.
The single malt whiskies from Campbeltown have a distinctive coastal character, and are known for their dryness.
