There was a time when no one would question the existence of Campbeltown, a town that once had close to 30 distilleries operating. But in 1998 only one was left - Springbank - and the SWA (Scotch Whisky Association) decided that one distillery can't constitute a region. Even re opening of Glen Scotia Distillery was not enough for SWA to consider.

Hadley Wright, the owner of Springbank, opened up Glengyle making the number of distilleries equal to that of the Lowlands, and Campbeltown was once again able to function as a region on its own.
